California Court Bans Checking Smartphone Maps

I was reading this article today from TechCrunch. While I agree we should not be texting and driving it will come to the point were you can’t do anything in the car. I use my iPhone as my GPS unit and got rid of my standalone GPS so I guess I will be pulling over to add a new location. I do use voice activation to put the address in but I have to tap it to start it up so not sure if that would be considered checking my smartphone. But according to the article checking email is fine, which makes no sense. The current texting and driving law, VC Section 23123.5 already states you can’t send or read any text based communications (sms, email, etc.) without it being hands free. So without looking into the source of this I am not sure they really need to add email to it since it applies under the current law.

I do get upset when I see Police Officers on their phones up to their ear and driving. If I have to follow the law I would think that the Police should also.

While we are at it why don’t we ban eating while driving, I think that is just as distracting as texting while driving. Okay that is my rant for the day.
